Handbuilt ceramics with American roots often draw inspiration from indigenous and early settler traditions, particularly those of Native American cultures.

This ancient process emphasizes creating pottery by hand rather than using a potter's wheel. Here's a basic explanation about handbuilding, burnishing, and wood firing ceramics with American roots:

What will you learn in a 5 weeks course:

1. Handbuilding Ceramics

Handbuilding is the technique of shaping clay by hand, without the use of a wheel. This process allows for a more organic and personal touch. The most common handbuilding techniques include:

  • Pinch Pot
  • Coil Building
  • Slab Building

These techniques often form the basis of both functional and artistic pottery, and they allow for highly creative designs.

2. Burnishing Ceramics

Burnishing is the process of smoothing the surface of the clay to give it a polished, glossy appearance without the use of glaze.

This technique can enhance the texture of the pottery and give it a rich, earthy look.

3. Wood Firing Ceramics

Wood firing is an ancient and traditional method of firing ceramics, where wood is used as the fuel to heat the kiln. This process imparts unique textures, colors, and finishes to the pottery.

We will:

  • Handbuild and decorate all the pieces
  • burnish the pieces
  • Wood fire the pieces
  • Share a good moment, make new friends, we talk about pottery and arts.
  • Beeswax and polish pieces

Post-Firing: The class after firing, we reheat the pieces to apply beeswax, making them waterproof and giving them a glossy finish. This process not only enhances the ceramics but also reflects a beautiful and profound journey. It allows us to reconnect with ourselves, with the earth, and transform raw clay into art and functional ELEMENTOS.
